Students of Omega International School participate in a United Nations Conference
The United Nations Student Leadership Conference on Development is an annual video conference where students from six chosen nations from around the globe debate a global crisis and create resolutions that could be passed at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Scheduled on the 19th of February, Omega International School, Kolapakkam, Chennai was the only school from the country; one of two schools from Asia out of six countries from around the globe; to represent the region and provide an exhaustive analysis to address a globally significant problem.
Climate Change and Sustainable Development Goals was the subject of analysis and Omega students have been involved in numerous activities that equipped them with the knowledge and skill needed to debate on the global platform. Omega students have embraced their role as sincere ambassadors capable of providing a responsible stand on Climate Change affecting the region of India by organizing a Model United Nations forum, a unique exhibition on Climate Change addressing the multi-disciplinary approach, a Human Rights Week commemoration, a road rally on pollution, inviting subject matter experts – Dr.Venkataraman, Senior Consultant at UNESCO, Mr Subramanian, Project Engineer at Norway’s DNV GL, Mr Wayne Jacobi, Director of Global Education Motivators and more. To further provide a holistic perspective, Omega International School also invited participants from the neighbouring schools including the community High Schools for their ground views on the subject.
The video conference was held through the night on 19th Feb and began with an address by the Chairperson at the UN HQ followed by an address by Mr. Wayne Jacobi, the Director of Global Education Motivators. All student leaders on the platform then presented their Opening Remarks and proceeded with their views on Climate Change and the related subthemes of Migration, Educating on the realities and Scientific Solutions of Climate Change. Through the process, student leaders learn the art of diplomacy and negotiations while deliberating on the problem and collaborate with all participants to arrive at an acceptable Plan of Action. The viability of solutions, discussion on government policies and the difficulties in implementation are also discussed.
The six-hour long debate session culminated with 317 students voting ‘Yes’ for the proposed Plan of Action, which helped them to pass the motion. Mr. Wayne Jacobi concluded by explaining the process of now facilitating the student representatives’ signatures to present the official document at the UN HQ. The document will reflect on what is believed to better tackle the global problem of Climate Change by the current generation of student leaders.
